Well, if I want to combine beats 1 and 4 of A with beat 2 of B and beat 3 of C, I can do this by resizing or chopping the pattern clips the same way I would with loops in the playlist - without creating a unique pattern. Say I make three drum patterns, A, B, and C. But you can manipulate the pattern clips in the playlist in ways similar to audio clips. That's true if you alter the pattern itself. Just think of the pattern blocks that you'd assemble normally AS the patterns you'd place in the playlist anyways. Like /u/gabrielsburg said, there used to be a registry fix you could run that would bring it back, but there's really no need to now. This allows me to duck sounds waaaay easier vs setting an automation clip to dive the volume down for each individual voice I have going on. One of the other things I like to do to break up track is slide a playlist pattern voice to the left slightly while keeping other voices up. You certainly may have been able to do that previously with pattern blocks, but there's no need to down, again, it's redundant. I can right click the playlist block -> Make Unique and then set an automation clip to do just that. Lets say I want to pitch bend into the chorus. Now one of the things I can do is make one of those running into a chorus unique. On a surface level, they are functionally the same except now (and correct me if I'm wrong) but you can make unique patterns and essentially have way more control over the individual playlist blocks. Make a little something in the Channel Rack and then start drawing those patterns in to the Playlist. You're essentially doing the same thing when you draw the patterns from the Channel Rack (previously the Step Sequencer) into the Playlist except that now you have more control. Here's why: Pattern blocks were all well and good, but were redundant in a lot ways.
